One of the oldest firms in Adrian, Stevenson Lumber, Inc. was founded in 1873 as A. Stevenson and Sons. The business remained in the family until 1984, when eight employees of the firm, a family in their own right after working together for more than 10 years, bought the company.
When Archimedes Stevenson founded A. Stevenson and Sons, as the business originally was named, the products differed considerably from those sold today. It was primarily a coal business in those days, and the lumber business was seasonal. Lumber was the mainstay in the summer months. When the weather became cold the coal business took over, and coal was delivered with a wagon and a team of horses.
Today Stevenson Lumber, Inc., sells lumber, plywood, doors, windows, roofing, cement products, roof trusses, engineered wood products, millwork, paneling, hardware, hand and power tools, paints, insulation, ceiling tiles, nails, plumbing and electrical supplies, and kitchen and bath products.
Family members involved in Stevenson Lumber after Archimedes Stevenson were, Frank Stevenson, followed by William H. Stevenson, a well known Adrian resident who passed away in 1965. His daughter, Mrs. Kenneth A. (Mary) Wassink, was the fourth generation Stevenson to become involved with the store, and her husband worked for the company for 42 years.
The group of employees that purchased the company in 1984 is an integral part of the day-to-day operations of Stevenson Lumber, Inc. Entering their third decade as stewards of the Stevenson legacy, they continue to uphold the values that helped the Stevenson family grow and develop a successful business here in Lenawee County.
